I can’t write much, but a picture speaks a thousand words. The boys’ dad watched them for the weekend, and my dad took me shopping for low iodine food for the week. Then he helped me chop, dice, and grilled the chicken and meat. This was all recommended to be done before I was in the hypothyroidism state, so it was very difficult to get it done, but we did.
The diet says you can eat meat you prepare yourself, and as many fruit and veggies, as you want (no soy), but I can’t get enough protein from the fruits and veggies I need, so having the meat will help me immensely with my energy level for the week.
The website that I got some of the recipes from (you can download their free cookbook), and read up on the low iodine diet, is ThyCa– (Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association). I found it to be very helpful, and so far the recipes have turned out great. One good tip they had was to read the labels. We started to buy some organic ingredients, but found the organic black beans for instant, had sea salt in them, which is worse than just regular salt, because sea salt is higher in iodine. I would have never had know that, if I had not read through their information.
Here is a picture of most of the low iodine food we were able to prepare:
I would have never been able to do it without the help of my and my boys’ family, so thank you. I am still waiting to hear when I can take the thyroid replacement hormone. Until I can take it, I am not going to start feeling better, but as of today there is only one week to go on the low iodine diet.

How was your diet? I am starting my diet on Saturday and go into the hospital fro radiation and isolation on Sept 21st! I am really not looking forward to the diet! I am preparing foods this week. Any helpful hints? I think I will be a twig byt eh end of this diet!
I just found out today that I have thyroid cancer. I’m doing all sorts or research to see what I’m in for.
I would really like to hear how your doing and if you have any advice for me.
Hi Jamie,
Thanks for your comment- I am doing well. 🙂
I am sorry to hear about your thyroid cancer. The good news is it is very treatable, and reoccurrence is rare.
I would make sure you have an endocrinologist on board before your surgery and you have a definite date for when you will be receiving a thyroid replacement drug. It is very common for them to give it to you a few days after surgery.
Regarding the low iodine diet, prepare as much as the food you can before you become hypothyroid. You will not feel like chopping, dicing, and cooking food then. The diet usually is only for about 2 weeks maximum, and a few days after you receive you radioactive iodine pill. I found it helped me to keep this in mind- the diet isn’t forever. It also helped me to remember it is low iodine- not no iodine, so beat yourself up if you slip up a few times.
Here is a really good website from the Thyroid Cancer Survivor’s Assoication- (ThyCa): https://www.thyca.org/rai.htm
I used it a lot for my cancer research. There is lots of helpful information on thyroid cancer, treatment, and the low iodine diet.
Hang in there- it is rough for a few weeks normally, but then things get better. I never thought I would feel well enough to be hiking a month after receiving they thyroid replacement hormone, and I’m running in the Race for the Cure in two weeks. It is hard when you are not feeling well, but it will pass and you will be stronger and healthier.
Keep me posted on your health.

Heather,
I don’t have a endo yet. I’ve been working with my family doctor and my general surgeon who removed the first half of my thyroid.
I was told that I wouldn’t get any replacement hormones until after the radiation. That they would just let me bottom out so the radiation works better.
My tumor was 4.5cms so it was very large.
I had a fine needle biopsy prior to the first surgery and was told it was not cancer.
After the doctor removed my tumor he sent in to the lap as was the norm and they found cancer. It was a shock to everyone including the doctor.
I’ve been feeling miserable for some time now and I guess I know why now.
I have a blog where I have been trying to write in every day. http://www.prettyinpinpixels.com/blog
Have a great day.
Huggles,
Jamie
Jamie,
I just had my thyroid removed on 9/14.
Some words of incouragement regarding the surgery. It wasn’t difficult,i didn’t experience any pain afterwards just soreness. The worst part was recovering from being put out fot 5 hours, it took me 4 days to feel better. Within a week i felt pretty normal. My surgeon had a lot of experience with this surgery (300 surgeries)i’m sure it was helpful.
I’m starting LID on 10/11
Good luck to you !!
