Kids Say the Darnest Things

If you sat down and thought of the weirdest, oddest, thing that your child say one day, I don’t think in your wildest dreams, you can fully appreciate the way their little minds work.

Example: Over the weekend, we went and got a flu shot.  The nurse said for Cole, the easiest and less painful place for his shot was in his bum.  Cole was a trooper- he let out a little cry, for a whole three seconds, and then he was done.  Last night, as we were putting on his pajamas, I noticed a tiny black and blue mark, on his bum, where he had gotten his shot.  I pointed it out to Joe, and of course Ryan was watching and listening to everything.

We also noticed that there was a patch of skin on Cole’s bum that looked like it was becoming more irritated.  He has had it for about a month, and we just thought it was a patch of dry skin, but it hasn’t been going away.  I had a Dr.’s appointment today, and called this morning to see if the Dr. could look at this patch of skin on Cole.  Of course Ryan was listening to everything I was saying.

At the doctor, again, Cole was so good.  He just rolled over, and laid down on his tummy and let the doctor look at his bum.  He determined that Cole has a small patch of eczema.  He told me some things I could do for it, and that was the extent of Cole’s examination.

Tonight as Joe was giving the boys a bath, I was in the other room, folding towels.  Ryan started to cry saying, that the “pinches” on Cole’s bum, scare him.  We had no idea what he was talking about, but he kept on and on, repeating he didn’t like the “pinches.”  I went into the bathroom, and asked Ryan if he meant the needle prick where Cole got his shot scared him, and he said no, the pinches, and there were three of them that scared him.  Then he held up his fingers and counted to three, for emphasis.

We still had no clue, what he meant, but he was crying more intently at this point.  Joe had Cole stand up, and asked Ryan to show us what on Cole’s bum scared him.  Our little Cole- what a sweetie.  He just stood up, and let Ryan point out the baby CELLULITE / DIMPLE pockets on his little bum.  Evidently Cole’s baby fat deposits scare Ryan.

Well, I just couldn’t stop laughing.  I went into the other room and laughed, so Ryan wouldn’t see me laughing (I didn’t want him to think I was laughing at him), while Joe explained he didn’t have to be scared of the “pinches” on Cole’s bottom.

I have no idea if all this attention the last few days on Cole’s bum brought this on, or if this is something that really was scaring Ryan.  At any rate, it is pretty darn funny- oh the things they come up with!

A Boy That Goes Bump in the Night

Ryan has always slept very well in his own bed, and has been sleeping in a toddler bed since he 18 months old.  The last few weeks, however, he has woken up several times during the night, not wanting to sleep in his bed.

This all started when he was sick, and had a really high fever.  That was the first time he had a nightmare.  Now it is like every other night, he wakes up from a bad dream, crying, and his heart is pounding. I am not sure what has triggered these dreams, and hope it is just a phase.

The rest of the times he wakes up, it is like he is sleep-walking.  He’ll talk to us, but not make much sense, and he doesn’t always remember these conversations the next morning.

A few nights ago, Ryan was waking up about every two hours, and he kept coming in our room, in our bed.  We have a canopy bed that is about 3 1/2 feet off the ground.  He uses the ledge as a step, and will usually climb up into bed on Joe’s side of the bed, and then he wiggles into the middle of the bed.  Joe is a very heavy sleeper, and doesn’t always wake up when Ryan decides to join us.  Most of the time, Ryan will wake up and want to go back in his bed after a while, and then when he wakes up in his bed, he comes back into our bed, and so forth.  To be fair, one night Joe said this happened 3 times, and he got up every time to put Ryan back to bed- evidently I slept right through it!

The other night, I heard him come in the room, and climb up on Joe’s side of the bed.  He didn’t climb over Joe, so he was in the middle- he just turned on his side and fell back to sleep.  He wasn’t right at the edge of the bed, and he was snuggled up to Joe, so I didn’t think anything of it, and fell back to sleep myself.

About an hour later, I woke up to this very loud boom!  I sat up immediately, and tried to figure out what this noise was.  As soon as I looked at the side of the bed, where Ryan was, I noticed he was gone!  Joe was still sleeping, so I climbed over Joe, and looked down on the floor, and there was Ryan curled up on the floor sleeping.  He had obviously rolled out of bed, dropped about 3 1/2 feet onto the floor, and was still sleeping!

I was still kind of half asleep myself, so I poked Joe until he responded and told him Ryan fell out of bed.  Joe wasn’t awake, and just said, “Uh-huh…that’s too bad,” and he was back to sleep..

I got out of bed, and went and picked up Ryan.  He was still asleep, and I figured if he was hurt, he wouldn’t have stayed asleep.  So I carried him back into his room, and tucked him back into his bed (about 6 inches off the ground, with a guard rail), where I knew he wouldn’t roll out of bed again.

In the morning, he was fine and I asked him if he remembered falling out of bed.  He said no, so I told him, and Joe (who didn’t remember any of this either), what had happened.  Ryan got a big kick out of it, and now laughs and says, “I rolled right out of your bed, plopped on the floor, and didn’t even wake up.”

So I am glad he didn’t get hurt, but I hope these night wakings don’t last too much longer.  As a mother, it is hard to relax, and fall into a deep sleep, when you feel you have to keep an ear out for your sleep-walking child.

Trick-or-Treat

Our actual Halloween night went pretty much like I thought.  Joe and I both arrived home from work around 5:30, and we ate dinner at Joe’s parent’s house.

Around 7, we left to go to a few friends homes to trick-or-treat.  Cole LOVED his costume this time.  On Saturday, he was fighting the hat (a.k.a. Big Bird’s head), but he kept it on, and even started flapping his arms like a bird for our friends.  Ryan decided he didn’t like his train overalls anymore, but he at least agreed to wear his hat and kerchief.

We got home about an hour later, and thought we had missed most of the trick-or-treater’s.  We had a huge bag of candy we wanted to get rid of, so when a few came by, I told them they could have two pieces.  The kids looked like they hit the jackpot!

Ryan and Cole got into handing out the candy very quickly.  Every time the doorbell would ring, they would scream, and run over to the door.  Cole would wave and smile at all the kids, and then try to walk out the door with them.  Ryan would hold the bowl with the candy, and watch as all the kids got their treats.

About half an hour later, we were almost out of candy, and we were getting another rush.  So the next time the bell rang, I told Ryan that we were only going to let the kids have one piece of candy, because we were running out.  Ryan held the bowl out, and as soon as I opened the door, he said just as seriously as he could, “You only get ONE piece of candy- not two- you only get ONE!”  The kids were all looking at him like he was a candy Scrooge, but I had to laugh.  Thanks to his candy “management,” we managed not run out of candy.

The boys had a great Halloween, and Ryan was asking me tonight if anymore trick-or-treater’s were coming by-he wanted to hand out more candy.

Hope everyone had a wonderful and happy Halloween! Can you believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner?

Happy Halloween

Even though Halloween isn’t until Wednesday, we had our major outing on Saturday.

Our town has a Halloween parade, where all the kids can march down the Main St., for about 6 blocks.  Two local high school bands also marched.  Then the kids can go to the local businesses to trick-or-treat.

Ryan was a train engineer, and Cole was Big Bird.  It was a cold morning, but I bundled the boys up under their costumes.  Cole seemed a little overwhelemed, and ended up riding on Joe’s shoulders during most of the parade.  Ryan wanted to ride in his wagon, except for when the bands were marching by- then he wanted to be right up there, watching them.

We went to a few stores and got a little candy, and some stickers.  Ryan ate one lollipop and that was it.  He didn’t even ask for any candy today, so we’ll count our blessings for another year.

A photographer from the local paper stopped us, and asked us what Cole’s name was, and how old he was. We had a feeling he would be in the paper today, and he was!  It was a really cute picutre of Cole sitting on Joe’s shoulders, and Cole was yawning.  I don’t have the photographer’s permission to use the picture here, but here are some pictures I took:

I have to work on Wednesday, and by the time I get off, and we eat, it is usually around 7 pm.  Joe has to be in a town about 200 miles away on Wednesday, and won’t be home until later.  So we’ll see if we venture out again on Halloween night.  I hope everyone has a Happy and safe Halloween!

It Was Bound To Happen

It was bound to happen- I caught the nasty cold(s) that Ryan and Cole have.

Ryan is *finally* better.  He still has an occasional cough, but he is back to his happy, old, self.  Poor Cole seems like he is in the worse of it right now- lots of congestion and a cough.  I feel so bad for the little guy.  He wakes up at night, because he can’t breathe, and he throws up, because of all of the gunk in his throat he can’t get out.  Then he just wants to be held.

On Sunday night, I held him for 3 hours- until 4 am.  Every time he was asleep, and I would try to set him back in his crib, he’d wake up and start crying.  After 3 hours, and about 10 attempts, he finally stayed asleep.

On Monday night, I thought I would try another tactic- after he threw up all over me, and I gave him a bath (at 1 am), to try to clear up his congestion, I brought him to sleep with me.  He fell asleep on top of me- right away, and his breathing was really good- no raspy noises.  I could taste the sleep I was going to get- wrong!  After about 15 minutes, he started tossing and turning, and I was so bone-dead tired, I just didn’t have the energy to get up, and sit with him until he fell asleep.  So I let him toss around on me, and got about 10 minutes of sleep all night.

Needless to say, it has been a fun few nights at my house. On top of that I am trying to get over this junk too.  It is odd when you stay at home, and you are only around your kids all day, you never really think that you are sick.  You still have to get up, make them their food, play with them, take care of them, etc. They don’t care if you have a cold, life must go on.

I have the same little nagging, hacking, annoying cough now too.  This afternoon at work, after listening to me cough all day, my boss told me that I sounded awful, and I should go home and take care of myself!  I immediately told her I felt fine- I just had this cough.  It was like an instant reaction to state that I wasn’t sick.

Then I started thinking, that she was right. I didn’t feel that great, and this cough and cold is wearing me down.  She told me not to come in tomorrow, so I’m going to accept her offer, not go in, and rest.  I’ll see if I feel better by the weekend and maybe go in on Saturday for a few hours to catch up.

It really is ironic for me anyway, that as much effort, thought, and worry I put into my boys’ health, it is so hard for me to think of my own health in the same way.  I’m glad there was someone today that reminded me that it is okay to take a break and rest when I’m not well.

So if I don’t blog for the next few days, you know I am resting…well, at least as much as I can with one active three-year old, and one sick toddler.  🙂
