Today I saw this posted on a parenting board that I belong to, and I really liked it, especially since Green Eggs & Ham, is one of Ryan’s favorite books.
It appears the author is unknown, but it did appear June 9, 2006 in Mothering under -Breastfeeding by Barb (and she stated she didn’t know who the author was). Hope you get a smile out of it. 🙂
DR. SEUSS FOR NURSING MOTHERS
Would you nurse her in the park?
Would you nurse him in the dark?
Would you nurse him with a Boppy?
And when your b00b are feeling floppy?
I would nurse him in the park,
I would nurse her in the dark.
I’d nurse with or without a Boppy.
Floppy b00b will never stop me.
Can you nurse with your seat belt on?
Can you nurse from dusk till dawn?
Though she may pinch me, bite me, pull,
I will nurse her `till she’s full!
Can you nurse and make some soup?
Can you nurse and feed the group?
It makes her healthy strong and smart,
Mommy’s milk is the best start!
Would you nurse him at the game?
Would you nurse her in the rain?
In front of those who dare complain?
I would nurse him at the game.
I would nurse her in the rain.
As for those who protest lactation,
I have the perfect explanation.
Mommy’s milk is tailor made
It’s the perfect food, you need no aid.
Some may scoff and some may wriggle,
Avert their eyes or even giggle.
To those who can be cruel and rude,
Remind them breast’s the perfect food!
I would never scoff or giggle,
Roll my eyes or even wiggle!
I would not be so crass or crude,
I KNOW that this milk’s the perfect food!
We make the amount we need
The perfect temp for every feed.
There’s no compare to milk from breast-
The perfect food, above the rest.
Those sweet nursing smiles are oh so sweet,
Mommy’s milk is such a treat.
Human milk just can’t be beat.
I will nurse, in any case,
On the street or in your face.
I will not let my baby cry,
I’ll meet her needs, I’ll always try.
It’s not about what’s good for you,
It’s best for babies, through and through.
I will nurse her in my home,
I will nurse her when I roam.
Leave me be lads and ma’am.
I will nurse her, Mom I am.

Just curious, what do you think about breast-feeding while you are acting as a chaperon on a school trip for 4th graders? Appropriate or not? I am would like someone else’s perspective on this.
That is so cute…. 🙂
Thanks for your comment on my blog. Aunthood RULES! Hope you are enjoying it as much as I am!!!
Total: Would you think twice about pulling out a bottle for the baby on a trip? If not, why should you think twice about breastfeeding your baby on the trip- the baby still needs to eat, right? I would breastfeed while on the trip. I probably wouldn’t just “whip it out” in front of the 4th graders, but I don’t see any problems when you needed to nurse, to just sit down and do it- my experience is if *you* don’t draw attention to it, and make a big deal out of it, probably no one else will even notice. They will probably just think the baby is sleeping, or you are cuddling the baby. If a child does notice, you could just say, “I’m feeding the baby, or the baby is eating right now.”
If you really feel uncomfortable about it, maybe you could pump your milk and then give your baby the bottle with the breastmilk- at least she would still be getting breastmilk, but depending on how long the trip is, you still may need to nurse. Most states have laws that protect you when nursing- allowing you to nurse in public, where ever you are allowed to be as the mother. I would go for it, and nurse on the trip. 🙂
Anyway, that is my .02– any other thoughts from anyone? Let us know what you decide, Total…good luck…you can do it.
As I am male, it isn’t my worry. I just posed the question since my wife (a teacher) encountered this situation on a recent field trip. It made several parents uncomfortable and upset.
great poem. 🙂
re: TT’s question…i think it’s appropriate too, and i wouldn’t think twice about it myself. a baby has as much right to eat as everyone else.
i don’t see why the sight of a nursing baby would’ve made the other parents uncomfortable and upset.
TT- sorry, I *thought* you were male 🙂
That’s too bad some of the parents got upset…it really is too bad, and when things like this happen, it makes women feel like they have done something wrong. Unless the mother just exposed herself to the children, (which I seriously doubt), I don’t see why or what right other’s would have to be upset. If they didn’t like it, then they could easily turn away, or not watch the mother nurse-no one was forcing them to watch her nurse. Again, I am sure no one would bat an eye if the mother pulled out a bottle to feed her baby, and it is sad in our society, people get upset when a mother chooses to feed her baby the way nature intended.
Did your wife have to step in to resolve it?
